Lefty or Righty?

Wouldn't it just be awesome if Max were left handed (it's even on Wiki!) just like me? I would totally relish at this fact and just gloat at how strong my genes were. But, if he were right handed, well that's ok too (meh!).

From what i've read, about 10-15% of the world's population are left handed. One of the factors that affect such variances are that some scientists consider people who write with their left, but do EVERYTHING ELSE with their right are ID'd as left handers, while others don't think so.  According to this webpage (nothing super scientific here)  http://www.anythingleft-handed.co.uk/lefty-probability.html, the chance of 2 right handed parents (as with both my parents) having a left handed child is approx 9%. How cool is that to be in that slim 9% group?  However, if you have 1 left handed parent (me) and the other is right handed (Gene), there is a 19% chance that our kid will be left handed- with left handed mothers more likely to have left handed children than left handed fathers.

According to babycenter, babies might show their preference for handedness around 6+ months.  Let us quote,
"Your baby's preference for her right or left hand may start to appear as early as 6 to 9 months of age. Even so, you won't be able to determine true right- or left-handedness until your child is 2 or 3 years old, when she'll begin to favor the same hand consistently. And some children may be ambidextrous (using both hands equally) until they're 5 or 6, when they finally make a choice."

If they started to show handedness now, it may actually be a neurological thing that needs to get assessed- yikes!!
"If your baby seems to be using one hand exclusively before she's 18 months old, however, talk to your pediatrician, as early hand dominance may be a sign of motor development problems."

Anyhow, whatever handedness Max may turn out to be, what a wonderful exciting thing to see unfold before my eyes! Perhaps he'll be the type, like me, that just writes with their left and does everything else with their right. Or, be a true-true lefty!
