First Annual Christmas Gift Guide

I borrowed this idea from my former collegue Andrea at Mama in the City.  I thought it was just such a good idea to get out of the big box/big brand type of things to buy kids and think about all the independent stores out there for gifts for the little one.

If I had my baby now and it was newborn to 1 year old, I would buy this for him:

I saw these "classic abc" blocks at Dilly Dally on Commercial Drive. I think the presentation of these blocks attracted me to the display and reading more about them sold me on the product.  They are just so cute! Embossed, educational, heirloom quality to boot. I like that there are no sharp edges and that they're light and fun to play with...and that it won't hurt if thrown at you hahaa! I also like the fact that it tells you on the packaging when the item was made...it's not mass produced, but it is kind of mass produced. I wish there was a tagalog version of this so i can teach myself as well as the kid some of the language, but right now, there's just some of the more common languages available like japanese, spanish, i think even greek?! check out the website!

If I had my baby now and it was 1-3 years old I would buy this for him:

BOOKS and FLASHCARDS

self explanatory! you gotta start these kids out young these days!

If I had my baby now and it was 3-5 years old I would buy this for him:

i love wooden toys! There's so much crap out there about plastic toys that you just can't win...at least you know with wooden toys, they're somewhat natural and hopefully safer as long as the paint isn't frickin lead based! I forgot what brands i've seen, but Melissa and Doug is a popular brand i've seen at Chapters, Homesense, and various other toy stores. I would say there's a lot of house play ones out there more than anything...like food (sushi, cupcakes, ice cream) but there are ones like tool sets, magnetic dolls, and just some general dexterity and learning related wooden toys. SO cute!
