Baby Banana at 21 weeks!






Hello 21 weeks? I'm not sure which is more overwhelming to say, "oh i'm 21 weeks" or "oh, i'm just over 5 months."  Time is flying by so fast!
  • not that I have any leg cramps at night, but I have woken up a couple of times to my calf flexing and it felt like I was going to have a full blown charlie horse, but it never evolved into one...thank God!

Why am I having leg cramps during pregnancy?

No one really knows why pregnant women get more leg cramps. It's possible that your leg muscles are tired from carrying around all of your extra weight. Or they may be aggravated by the pressure your expanding uterus puts on the blood vessels that return blood from your legs to your heart and the nerves that lead from your trunk to your legs.

Leg cramps may start to plague you during your second trimester and may get worse as your pregnancy progresses and your belly gets bigger. While these cramps can occur during the day, you'll probably notice them most at night, when they can interfere with your ability to get a good night's sleep.

How can I prevent leg cramps?

Try these tips for keeping leg cramps at bay:
  • Avoid standing or sitting with your legs crossed for long periods of time.
  • Stretch your calf muscles regularly during the day and several times before you go to bed.
  • Rotate your ankles and wiggle your toes when you sit, eat dinner, or watch TV.
  • Take a walk every day, unless your midwife or doctor has advised you not to exercise.
  • Avoid getting too tired. Lie down on your left side to improve circulation to and from your legs.
  • Stay hydrated during the day by drinking water regularly.
  • Try a warm bath before bed to relax your muscles.
Some research suggests that taking a magnesium supplement in addition to a prenatal vitamin may help some women avoid leg cramps. However, other research showed that magnesium supplements had no significant effect on the frequency or intensity of leg cramps during pregnancy. Check with your provider before taking any kind of supplement during pregnancy.
You may have heard that having leg cramps is a sign that you need more calcium, and that calcium supplements will relieve the problem. Though it's certainly important to get enough
calcium, there's no good evidence that taking extra calcium will help prevent leg cramps during pregnancy. In fact, in one well-designed study, pregnant women taking calcium got no more relief from leg cramps than those taking a placebo.

  • had some pretty crappy sleeps this last weekend, which means...mitsuBITCHY! LOL! And why did I have sheitty sleeps? 1) it was hot as hell and 2) because I was sleeping with my earrings on. Stupid I know. Took the earrings off and i've been sleeping like a baby ever since on a nightly basis
  • more people than ever have noticed the bump now despite me wearing the same outfits all the time! haha ..and really now, they're just not afraid to ask. It's been straight up, "by the way are you pregnant?" yep 21 weeks. "oh ok, I was afraid to ask but I couldn't help notice. Congratulations!" LOL!
  • I definitely feel bigger and pregnant!
  • I was watching Pregnant in Heels and I tuned right into the part where Rosie Pope brought a therapist to this couple's apt.  A couple who she felt was not very connected to the baby, not in denial, but not super lovey dovey wovey shmovey! I was like, "that's me!" haha. So the therapist said to the woman something in the realms of, "I think you are anxious, and to prevent those feelings of anxiety you have set this pregnancy aside in your mind and not face the fact."  I wonder if this is me? Hmmm...i'm not an anxious person in general, but yeah I can see some part of this as pertaining to moi. What am I anxious about? hmmm...going on mat leave, mr. unsteady job, and big spending! hmmmm...I can't say i'm overwhelmed by any means. Let's reassess at a later point!

  • I bought my first "frivolous" item! It's a Bugaboo footmuff in Orange! Seriously, I was drawing a blank as to how to keep this baby warm during the winter, and well, this helps according to feedback!
  • I've been having a lot of popping feelings in my lower abdomen up to my navel, randomly throughout the day, ok so more so when I sit down for long periods. I am not constipated, so it's definitely not gas! I wonder if this is what it feels like to feel the baby move? I definitely felt 3 consecutive muffled thuds just above my navel a few days ago, lying down, calm and relaxed. I never felt them again! Boo!! I definitely have not been feeling that increased activity at night as many would say (during the day when you're moving, the amniotic fluid lulls the baby to sleep. at night when you're trying to rest, the baby is not swishing around as much). No complaints, I want to sleep at night!

 Your baby's blood circulation is completely functional. The umbilical cord system continues to grow and thicken as blood travels with considerable force through the body to nurture the baby. The placenta is now almost equal in size to the baby.

Your baby will be getting much larger during the second half of your pregnancy. Your baby's crown-to-rump length at this time is 7.2 inches and she weighs approximately 10.5 ounces. Your growing baby is about the size of a large banana. You should be able to feel your uterus about a half of an inch above your navel. Your weight gain so far will be around 10 to 15 pounds.

As your baby begins to lay down more fat, your weight will also increase. During the next 10 weeks, you will gain about half of the total gain for your entire pregnancy. Strangers can now tell that you are pregnant! You might notice an increase in appetite because you need 500 more calories a day to support your charged up metabolism. It is best to avoid processed foods or foods high in fat, calories or sugar. Some women also get strong cravings for foods. If you notice a craving for something unhealthy, you should contact your doctor. Craving for unusual things is known as pica. Some women crave cigarette ashes, charcoal, beer and other non-food items during this time.

Your baby's different organs and systems are maturing. The fetal digestive system is functioning in a simple way and your baby can swallow amniotic fluid. After your baby swallows the amniotic fluid, she is able to absorb water and sugars from the fluid and then the waste is passed as far as the large bowel. Your baby swallows the amniotic fluid in order to prepare itself for life outside of the womb. Some babies consume as much as 17 ounces of amniotic fluid in a 24-hour period. Your baby already has a high number of red blood cells and the white blood cells are beginning to be produced. Taste buds are being formed on your baby's tongue this week also.

Don't be surprised if your legs and feet become swollen throughout the day. You should try to get off of your feet some throughout the day and prop your legs up. If you notice a substantial amount of swelling, you should contact your healthcare provider for evaluation.

You're probably feeling pretty comfortable these days. You're not too big yet, and the usual discomforts associated with early pregnancy are, for the most part, gone. If you're feeling good, relax and enjoy it while you can — the third trimester may bring with it a new crop of complaints.
That's not to say you won't have some minor glitches to deal with now. For example, increased oil production may contribute to the development (or worsening) of acne. If that's the case, be diligent about washing well with a gentle soap or cleanser twice a day, and make sure that any moisturizer or make-up you use is oil-free. Don't take any oral acne medications — some are very hazardous during pregnancy — or use any topical acne products without first checking with your practitioner.
You're also more prone to varicose veins now. As your pregnancy progresses, there's increasing pressure on the veins in your legs; higher progesterone levels, which may cause the walls of your veins to relax, can make the problem worse. You're more likely to get varicose veins if other family members have them. Also, they tend to get worse with each successive pregnancy and as you age. To help prevent or minimize varicose veins, exercise daily, prop up your feet and legs whenever possible, sleep on your left side, and wear maternity support hose.
You may also notice so-called spider veins (a group of tiny blood vessels near the surface of your skin), particularly on your ankles, legs, or face. They may have a spider- or sunburst-like pattern with little branches radiating out from the center, they may look like the branches of a tree, or they may be a group of separate thin lines with no particular pattern. Though they may be a bit unsightly, spider veins don't cause discomfort and usually disappear after delivery.
