20 weeks and 50% until Dun Dun dunnnn...

  • had a couple of miscarriage type of dreams this week, hmm...i don't remember the first one, but the one last night involved me feeling this surge, went to the bathroom and there was blood in my underwear and all over the seat. I definitely woke up right after I saw that!
  • some cramping on the lower right quadrant of my abdomen almost everyday after work and only as I walk from work to burrard skytrain.  maybe it's just regular cramps from exertion? but always on the same spot and always during the same activity!
  • I heard that starting from this week, the baby can kind of taste what i'm eating and thus it may affect their eating habits in the future.  So,..i'm going to continue eating what i'm eating possibly even eat more diverse cultural foods for that broad palette goal. God help the kid if he/she is a picky eater! i'm not going to put up with that sheit!
  • after much NAGGING and mild insulting (ie. "that looks so disgusting. get rid of it"), I finally took out my navel ring. I've had that thing for over 10 years, and guess what? it was a sheit show to take off! I couldn't remember which part unscrewed so I had two plyers pulling and turning at different directions all while trying not to rip it out of me and causing horrible scarring! In the end, it was the bottom jewel part that came off, I have hole on the upper part of my navel, and my belly button looks like a gaping hole leading to the abyss- it hasn't shallowed out at all  in my opinion and looks odd to me without the bar
  • it's been really hot in Vancouver lately. hot + car + pregnant backseat passenger do not mix = i personally would stay away from me, I am irritable! However, we have a scooter, so, though it's cold when the sun goes down, it's quite a refreshing ride during the sunny days.
  • no further acid feeling at the back of my throat or even any heart burn symptoms.  I've attributed that to a sad fact: i've found CHIPS that don't make me feel good! Boo hooo!!  it was a new flavor of Ruffles chips called "Spicy Ketchup." I'm kind of shocked that it didn't agree with me ...i guess the mix of salt, sour, and spicy just didn't work.  Gene made me throw it out prematurely, and basically, all symptoms stopped. Weird as I have no problem w/ Salt and Vinegar chips or even Ms. Vickies Jalepeno chips which I have almost every friday with my subway lunch
  • the baby bump is definitely there, and more pronounced after I eat and of course with what I wear. however, I still see people at work who don't know about this pregnancy zoom in on my abdomen but don't ask yet briefly pause before they continue on with what they're saying look. LOL! I'm sure they're thinking it'd be rude to ask!
  • i'm hearing a lot of popping in my joints even with just regular walking- especially in my knees. CracK! Pop! CraCK! pOP! CliCK! CliCk!  it's a little embarassing actually, makes me feel like an arthritic fogey. As i'm sitting here, i'm stretching my neck to each side and I can honestly predict that I will pop with each stretch. ew!

  • I called the midwife office and basically asked for a 3rd ultrasound req because of what the tech said he couldn't get pictures of. U/S was on Aug 29, called them Sept 6th, and the U/S dept still hasn't sent in the report! WTF?! How long does it take for a radiologist to read a damn ultrasound? So my request for another req was futile as they couldn't confirm what I was talking about! They said it may take another week too...WTF!!
  • I had a brief 1.5 week fruit smoothie hiatus because my blender motor died- yes, I use it that much! Well it was about 5 yrs old, so I guess it was time?! I have no idea. Anyways, because of the lack of blueberry  fruit smoothie intake. my skin broke out, ugh!! Fortunately, my parents bought be a blender for my birthday...and guess what? Pimples are disappearing! I love you blueberries! Frickin' cure all for my ailments! Funny how fresh blueberries don't have the same impact on my skin as the frozen ones! Weird!
  •  i'm officialliy not constipated or even have ANY constipation symptoms!
  • no stretchmarks related to pregnancy
  • I continue to need to void very frequently
  • I unfortunately have not felt the baby move or flutter or kick or any of that fun stuff yet! Boo!!
  • my boobs are so full and heavy looking, I wonder if they'll get bigger?! I know this may be TMI, but my areolas are bigger and darker too. I hope they don't get any bigger for that "silver dollar" look...hmmmm
  • my heads feeling foggy lately...I really attribute this to the long weekend I had where my schedule was totally thrown off (as in the sleeping at 9pm schedule)...I have to say I haven't had quality sleep these last 4 days and i'm catching up now.  I was thinking it may be my blood pressure, but of course, like the diligent nurse that I think I am, I haven't been checking! haha
  • I LOVE the taste of 7-up!! Only fountain though, I never did like canned as much. I can use a 7 up right NOW!


  • I also have a renewed interest in buying/researching baby stuff right now. Yes! Heck i'm even looking at ETSY (which I don't normally do as crafts are generally super overpriced) I guess the ultrasound pictures of a HUMAN on my fridge and phone really get the ball rolling vs. an ultrasound pic of a blob!
What does I-am-pregnant say?

Congratulations! This week marks the half way point of your pregnancy. It has been 18 weeks since the date of conception and your baby's crown-to-rump length is 5.6 to 6.4 inches. The fetus weighs about 9 ounces and your belly definitely has an obvious bulge. Your waistline has expanded and is no longer visible. Your uterus has now moved up enough that it is pushing your abdomen outwards. The top of your uterus is even with or just below your navel.
For the remainder of your pregnancy, the growing uterus puts pressure on your lungs, stomach and kidneys. This will make you feel short of breath, the need to urinate more frequently and can cause indigestion. The added pressure on your abdomen can also cause your bellybutton to protrude and cause an `outy` instead of an `inny`. Many pregnant women begin to notice stretch marks around this time as well. Your abdominal muscles are being stretched and pushed apart as your baby grows inside of you.

Your baby's skin begins to thicken this week and will develop four layers. Your baby's sebaceous glands secrete a waxy substance called vernix caseosa. Your baby will be born with this wax and it will look like paste. The vernix caseosa is crucial because it protects the fetus' fragile skin from the continuous immersion in amniotic fluid. Lanugo hairs secure the vernix caseosa in place and it is thick around the eyebrows. Scalp hair and toenails are beginning to form at this point. Hair can also be seen on the upper lip and eyebrows.

Around twenty weeks, most doctors will order a routine ultrasound to check the baby's development. Measurements will be taken and the sonogram technician will check to make sure there are no defects or abnormalities. Your ultrasound technician can also see how long your cervix is and can tell you approximately how much your baby weighs at this time. Most expectant women also find out the sex of their baby during this time! If your sonographer does not offer pictures, ask them for a copy of the photos.

Congratulations! You've hit the halfway mark in your pregnancy. The top of your uterus is about level with your belly button, and you've likely gained around 10 pounds. Expect to gain another pound or so each week from now on. (If you started your pregnancy underweight, you may need to gain a bit more; if you were overweight, perhaps a bit less.) Make sure you're getting enough iron, a mineral that's used primarily to make hemoglobin (the part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen). Some common non-meat sources of iron include legumes, soy-based products, spinach, prune juice, raisins, and iron-fortified cereals.

If you haven't already signed up for a childbirth education class, you may want to look into one, especially if you're a first-timer. A structured class will help prepare you and your partner for the rigors of labor and delivery. Most hospitals and birth centers offer classes, either as weekly meetings or as a single intensive, one-day session. Many communities have independent instructors as well. Ask your friends, family members, or caregiver for recommendations.
